On Oct. 2, 2017, at 6:17 AM, at Craters of the Moon National Monument, the dusting of snow on the lava beds had stopped and the sun had yet to rise, giving the scene an eerie glow.  It was before my breakfast, and I thought of powdered sugar on a sheet of brownies.
