Laying on the Mesquite Flats Sand Dunes in Death Valley National Park, with no apparent origin, this parched remnant of a tree looked like it had been dropped here as if by helicopter. There was no foliage within sight that hinted of having spawned a growth of such girth, and the sand surrounding the log was undisturbed except by wind. I found it charming and eerie at the same time.
