Dunes at Dawn

Dunes at Dawn

Image No. WP0101: Dunes at Dawn.  March 2017.  Mamiya 645AFD, Fujichrome Velvia 100, f/8, ⅛ sec.  Image specs: 5254 × 3941 pixels, 17.6 MB file size, 300 DPI.  Suitable for largest prints.

Located on BLM-managed land called White Pocket in Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, northern Arizona.  The backcountry route to this photographer’s paradise involves 1.5 hours of driving in technical 4×4 mode, trying to avoid getting stuck in deep sand.  Rain renders the roads impassable.  White Pocket is often thick with shutterbugs and photography instructors who sometimes wander into your frame, but few locations are more worth the inconveniences.  I’m forever indebted to Greg Jahn for clueing me in.
